A free way for businesses to work together and tackle climate change (6th August) The Mayday Network is a collaborative movement of businesses that have all made a commitment to act on climate change. Founded in 2007 by HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, it aims to support the Scottish Government's carbon reduction targets of a 42% reduction by the year 2020. The Prince's Mayday Network is the UK's largest group of businesses committed to taking action on climate change. Over 1,700 businesses of all sizes and from all sectors have signed-up to date in the UK, with 200 in Scotland, and collectively they promise to play a powerful role reducing the UK's carbon emissions. Joining the Network is free and easy all you need to do is to register your business and pledge to make a difference. The numerous business benefits associated with the network and a low carbon economy include cost savings, access to new networks and new business opportunities and an improved reputation as well as the clear environmental benefits. Read more... Changes to our Twitter page (5th August) Those of you who follow us on Twitter might have noticed some changes... We've joined forces with colleagues of ours at Zero Waste Scotland to ensure that we can let you know about the range of different things that we're doing to help business become more resource efficient. Zero Waste Scotland is the new programme created by the Scottish Government to support the delivery of its Zero Waste Plan. It will integrate the activities of: Waste Aware Scotland, WRAP Scotland, Keep Scotland Tidy, Remade Scotland, Envirowise in Scotland, NISP in Scotland and some programmes delivered by the Community Recycling Network for Scotland. Read more... Irish launch business food waste collections (1st July) Businesses producing large quantities of food waste in Ireland are from today (July 1) subject to new waste collection rules. The new Food Waste Regulation (SI 508 of 2009) means all major sources of food waste, like pubs, hotels, restaurants, canteens, supermarkets and nursing homes, must use a dedicated bin and not mix left overs with other waste. Bus firm set to divert waste for recycling (30th June) LOTHIAN Buses has said new recycling measures will see it divert around 550 tonnes of waste a year away from landfill for recycling. The bus company said a study carried out in conjunction with Zero Waste Scotland had shown that around 95 per cent of the rubbish left on its vehicles and the waste produced by the firm could be recycled. The council-owned bus firm said it had also begun sending its waste to a site in West Lothian rather than the west coast. Read more... Carpet sector considers 25% recycling target (26th February) The carpet industry is discussing plans to vastly increase waste carpet recovery rates with proposals for a self-imposed 25% recycling target by 2013 in its forthcoming National Action Plan. Tesco trials "BOGOF-Later" offer for perishable items (21st January) Supermarket giant Tesco announced yesterday (January 20) that it is to begin trials of its new 'Buy One Get One Free Later' offers this week in a bid to help its customers cut down on food waste. Read more... The Thistles Centre in Stirling Loves Rubbish! (18th January) A new campaign to "Love Rubbish" has launched at The Thistles in Stirling. The shopping centre aims to reduce its impact on the environment by encouraging shoppers to think about what happens to the rubbish accumulated by the centre. As part of this initiative, the centre has introduced recycling bins on the mall for customers to deposit their waste paper, plastic, cans and general rubbish. Read more...
