Glasgow Businesses Go Green Businesses in Glasgow have recycled more than 100 tonnes of waste since the introduction of a new recycling service to the city. That's the weight of more than twelve double decker buses! Can Do Recycling introduced the recycling service for Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) located in and around Glasgow city centre, offering paper, confidential paper, cardboard, plastic bottle and can collections from local businesses on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. In addition, electronic equipment, fluorescent tubes and office furniture can also be collected on an ad hoc basis. Congratulating businesses on taking a greener approach, Jim Sinclair, Director of Can Do Recycling said: "I am delighted to see so many businesses in Glasgow recycling their waste. It's a great way to make a positive contribution to your local environment and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. I would encourage businesses who have not yet signed up to get involved." As all businesses in Scotland are now required to pre-treat their waste as part of the Landfill (Scotland) 2003 Regulations, recycling has become an essential part of day to day business. By participating in this new scheme, local businesses can help to reduce the nine million tonnes of business waste produced in Scotland every year and make significant cost savings as landfill tax continues to rise. Fiona Whyte, Waste Aware Business Campaigns' Officer, added: "I am encouraged to see that businesses in Glasgow are making positive steps towards reducing, reusing and recycling their waste. Initiatives like this help us to reach our Business Waste Framework target of reducing the amount of business waste produced by at least 200,000 tonnes per year" The trial is funded by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) and is supported by Waste Aware Business, a national campaign that aims to raise awareness of business waste issues and provide information about landfill alternatives.
