Edinburgh Businesses LEEP into Action with New City Centre Recycling Service Businesses in Edinburgh city centre have diverted over 14 tonnes of waste from landfill, since March 2007, through the new LEEP Recycling service. That's the equivalent weight of more than seven black cabs! LEEP Recycling, in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council, collects paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles from local businesses on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, tailoring the service to meet customers' needs. As both businesses and consumers become increasingly aware of the need to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, recycling becomes an essential part of day to day business. By participating in this scheme, local businesses can help to protect the environment by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and make significant cost savings as landfill tax continues to rise. Congratulating businesses that signed up to the service, Louise Birnie, Sales Manager of LEEP Recycling, said: "I am delighted to see so many businesses in Edinburgh recycling their waste. Scotland's businesses currently produce around nine million tonnes of waste every year; three times household waste. Recycling is a great way to reduce the need for landfill and make a positive contribution to protecting the environment. I would encourage businesses who have not yet signed up to get involved." Fiona Whyte of Waste Aware Business added: "We are pleased to see LEEP Recycling providing SMEs in the centre of Edinburgh with another opportunity to recycle. LEEP Recycling is a well-established organisation that has offered a flexible business recycling service for SMEs in Edinburgh for over five years and this service will help to develop this further." The trial is funded by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) and is supported by Waste Aware Business, a national campaign that aims to raise awareness of business waste issues and provide information about landfill alternatives.
