Reduce
What does Reduce mean?
 | Reduce means taking steps to lower the amount of waste that we produce. For example, you could avoid ordering large amounts of excess stock for your business. Waste that is not created in the first place does not need to be reused, recycled or disposed of. Therefore reducing or preventing generation of waste is the most efficient and cost effective way to deal with your business waste. |
Why is reducing waste a good thing to do?
Reducing your waste:
- Saves the Earth's natural resources
- Saves energy and reduces the risk of climate change
- Reduces the need for landfill
- Can save your business money on waste disposal costs

Where can I find out more about reducing my waste?
There are a number of organisations that can offer free help and support to allow your business to reduce the amount of waste it generates, including Envirowise. Further details about them and other business support organisations can be found in the Links section of this website.
How can I reduce my waste?
There are a number of simple ways to reduce your waste including:
- Employees can try free-lunching which means lunching on food from home which would otherwise go to waste. This avoids unnecessary food and packaging waste and could help save some of the £570 million currently spent by Scottish workers on lunch every year (£3.40 per day on average).
- Avoid over packaging by buying in bulk and using bulk storage where possible
- Reduce unwanted mail by signing up to the Mailing Preference Service
- Avoid unnecessary printing costs; only print documents when necessary and print on the double-sided setting
- Avoid excess manufacturing costs by using raw materials as efficiently as possible in your manufacturing process
- Use solar powered items such as calculators to reduce battery waste
