Waste Aware TourismWaste Aware Business is promoting sustainable tourism in Scotland by encouraging all visitors to reduce, reuse and recycle. We have produced materials which tourism businesses in Scotland can freely download and use to increase the awareness of waste among tourists.![]() What is the campaign about? Scotland has the potential to be one of the greenest tourism destinations in Europe and the Scottish Government has an ambition to make Scotland a 'zero waste' country. It is therefore crucial that businesses and visitors reduce, reuse and recycle as much of their waste as possible. The campaign is one way of raising the profile of the issue amongst the very people who can make a difference. The campaign was originally launched as a pilot project in partnership with the Cairngorms National Park Authority who remain a key partner with specific materials available for businesses in the Cairngorms. Information for businesses in the Cairngorms National Park
Around 1.5 million visitors come to the Cairngorms National Park each year to enjoy the local attractions. Many of these visitors travel from overseas and have comprehensive recycling facilities at home. They might not realise that Scotland now offers similar recycling services for a variety of waste materials. It is up to all of us to let visitors know that holidays don't necessarily equal waste.
How can you get involved? John Thorne, the CNPA Economic Development Officer has said, "it is not only important that there are facilities available for businesses and tourists to recycle or reuse their waste, but also that they know and are encouraged on how and where they can access the facilities."If you want to know how you can recycle your business waste then please use the Business Recycling Directory. It details both collection services and centres where you can drop waste off. Whilst not every waste material is currently covered by these services, including some plastics, there are ways to minimise these types of waste. For example, some visitors might not be aware that tap water in the Cairngorms is perfectly drinkable and will therefore buy bottled water throughout their trip. By letting visitors know they don't need to buy bottled water you save them money and minimise their waste at source.
If you run or work in a tourism business then you can help by encouraging visitors to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste. If you provide recycling facilities then let visitors know how to use these. Use the materials provided below to help get the message across.
