Towards Zero WasteThe Scottish Government wants Scotland to become a Zero Waste country. Waste Aware Business supports this ambition because it offers clear benefits both to businesses and the environment.Find out more about how the Zero Waste Plan consultation might affect your business
Zero Waste means reducing the unnecessary use of raw materials; re-using products where possible and recovering value from products when they reach the end of their lives either through recycling, composting or energy recovery.Like 'Carbon Neutral' the concept of 'Zero Waste' is aspirational, which means it provides a benchmark for businesses to strive towards. It is a concept that both businesses and staff can easily understand and support by remembering that any waste sent to landfill takes you away from the ultimate goal. Some businesses in Scotland have been working towards Zero Waste for some time and have either eliminated all their waste to landfill or else come extremely close. We want to celebrate these achievements so have been in touch with three of these businesses to find out more. The businesses in question are Robert Wiseman Dairies near Glasgow, FMC Technologies Ltd in Dunfermline and Michelin in Dundee. They kindly showed us around their production sites, talked us through what they have done and answered a range of questions to give us an idea of the steps they have taken to eliminate waste to landfill. The results are detailed in the case studies below and show that Zero Waste can be achieved with the right processes in place and a determined approach to waste in your business. After all, no matter how big or small your business, until you reach Zero Waste there is always more you can do to improve. Please use the links below to read the individual case studies.
