WEEE Regulations Flowchart

This flowchart is designed to help you understand your role under the new WEEE regulations. Simply follow the chart from the section that most applies to your business. If you would like to print a copy of this flowchart please use the 'Print Version' button on the right of this page.

Is your business one of the following?
  
  
A Retailer/Distributor of Electrical and Electronic Equipment?

This includes wholesalers, internet sites, mail order and retailers.
A Producer of Electrical and Electronic Equipment?

If you manufacture, re-brand or import Electrical or Electronic Equipment.
A Business who uses Electrical and Electronic Equipment?

Do you use any of the five categories of Electrical or Electronic Equipment?
You must provide information to your customers about disposing of WEEE and the reasons why this must be kept separate from other waste.You must sign up to a Producer Compliance Scheme and mark all of your WEEE with the crossed out wheelie bin symbol, date and producer identification number.You must store collect, treat, recycle and dispose of your WEEE separately from your other waste.
You must set up an In-store Take Back System for customers to get rid of their old WEEE when they purchase a new product on a like-for-like basis.

OR

You must sign up to a Distributor Take Back Scheme and inform customers how they can dispose of their WEEE at Designated Collection Facilities (DCFs).

Your customers can find out where their local DCF is by visiting Sort-It
You must also provide and keep certain information about your WEEE for assistance with the treatment process and store this data for four years.The Business Recycling Directory features a list of companies who can help with disposing your WEEE.

Simply select the material you wish to dispose of and the area you are based in and you will be provided with a list of waste management companies who collect WEEE.

You must also keep proof that your WEEE has been correctly disposed of in this manner.
For more information on your role as a Retailer click here.You must also arrange for your WEEE to be taken to an approved authorised treatment facility (AATF). Your Producer Compliance Scheme can organise this for you.You must arrange and pay for the disposal of your WEEE if you bought it before 13/08/05 and you are not replacing it with new equivalent EEE. If you are replacing it you can arrange for your new supplier to take your old WEEE.

OR

You can dispose of your WEEE for free if you bought it after 13/08/05 and you are replacing it with new equivalent EEE.
